主啊，请陶冶我的儿子，
Build me a son,O Lord,
使他心性坚强，能明白自己软弱之处；
who will be strong enough to know when he is weak,

让他勇敢无畏，在恐惧中仍能坦然自视；
and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid;
让他在诚实的失败中能庄严自豪，不屈不挠；
one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat,
让他在获得胜利时，能谦逊而温和。
and humble and gentle in victory.

请陶冶我的儿子，莫让他以空虚的愿望代替行动；
Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds;
请让他认识主——
a son who will know Thee-
并且让他了解，理解别人又有自知之明，是一切知识的基石。
and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

我祈求您，
Lead him,I pray,
不要引他走上舒适安逸的坦途，
not in the path of ease and comfort,
让他在困难及挑战的督促和压力之下奋勇前进。
but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.
让他籍此学习在狂风暴雨中屹立不屈；
Here let him learn to stand up in the storm;
使他学会对受到挫折的人给予理解和同情。
heie let him learn compassion for those who fail.

请陶冶我的儿子，
Build me a son
使他心地清明、目标高远；
whose heart will be clear ,whose goal will be high;

让他在企图支配他人之前，先能掌握自己；
a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men;
使他能远瞻未来，但永不忘怀过去。
one who will reach into the future,yet never forget the past.
在他能掌握这些之后，
And after all these things are his,add,
我祈求您，还要赐给他足够的幽默，
I pray enough of a sense of humor,
使他能常保严正的态度，
so that he may always be serious,
但绝不自视过高，又不失活泼。
yet never take himself too seriously.

请赐他谦逊之心，
Give him humility,
让他永远记得：
so that he may always remember

真正的伟大来自朴实平凡，
the simplicity of true greatness,
真正的智慧来自虚怀若谷，
the open mind of true wisdom,
真正的力量来自温和内敛。
and the meekness of true strength.

那么，身为他父亲的我，
Then ,I,his father,
才敢轻声自许：“我已不虚此生。”
will dare to whisper,"I have not lived in vain."

白鞋子

道格拉斯.麦克阿瑟，美国五星上将。

他1903年毕业于西点军校，其总成绩是二十五年来所有学生中的第一名。1917年，参加第一次世界大战时，他是远东部队中最引人注目、最勇敢无畏的军官，同时也是受勋最多的军官之一。1924至1927年，他在西点军校担任校长，为建设美国现代化军队作出了重要贡献。1935年被任命为驻菲律宾美军司令。在第二次世界大战期间，负责指挥盟军与西南太平洋地区作战。

二次大战结束后，麦克阿瑟以盟军最高司令官名义，执行美国单独占领日本的任务。朝鲜战争期间，他力图将战争扩大到中国，为此与杜鲁门总统发生争执，被解除总司令一职，后于1951年回到美国。

晚年，他以一个战争英雄，为美国人民所崇敬。1962年，麦克阿瑟在西点军校接受为国服务优异的“西尔韦纳斯.耶塞奖”表彰。
